Journal Entry #1: Cancer Iftar The trip to cancer hospital on Friday, the 26th of August, was an experience that I will cherish forever. It was my birthday, and I had gotten up early to come to school in order to prepare the meals for the children at the underprivileged cancer hospital in Maadi and their families. When I got to school and opened the doors of the Elementary cafeteria, I felt a sense of unity amongst the CAC students that had already started working together, packing the lunches in an organized manner. I ventured into the kitchen, where I saw my friends taking the initiative to cook some of the frozen foods that were brought in. I helped them out for a while, however once all the food was cooked I began helping out by putting them into containers. Once all the containers had been filled and Iftar was approaching we all got on the buses and headed for the cancer hospital. When we got there, we unloaded the boxes from the buses and helped each other carry them into the bottom floor of the building. The children's floor was several floors above and there was only one elevator and not a lot of time to spare. So, we partnered up and began carrying the boxes up the the Children's floor. Once we had all gotten up there and the clock struck the time for Iftar, we began giving out the containers of food to the kids and their families as we visited hospital room by hospital room. We also had dozens of happy meals that had been donated by McDonalds to give to the kids. The smile on the kids' faces when I gave them happy meals were extremely memorable. Their smiles lit up the room as my friends and I entered. When we spoke to them, some were shy, however others were extremely talkative and enjoyed the conversation. All in all, when we had finally distributed all the meals to the kids and families the feeling I had was truly rewarding. I felt that I had spent my birthday not only productively but in a way that I am proud of.
